Over the years, as the water flows along the banks, we see many barges pass by on the Seine. And sometimes their names resonate with us, take us back in time, or make us smile.
More than we could imagine at first glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ship’s or boat’s names have always been quite a unique subject, with standards that evolve but also remain constant. Naturally, we look first to the sea\u2014that\u2019s where we generally find the ships whose names we first heard. For example, in the French Navy\u2014formerly the Royal Navy\u2014we often find names generally reflecting martial values or \u201cvirtues\u201d (Vaillant<\/em>, Intr\u00e9pide<\/em>, T\u00e9m\u00e9raire<\/em>\u2026), mythological figures (Amphitrite<\/em>, Neptune<\/em>, Th\u00e9s\u00e9e<\/em>\u2026), or even, during the Revolution, new ideals (Droit de l\u2019Homme<\/em>, Libert\u00e9<\/em>, R\u00e9volutionnaire<\/em>\u2026).

Often, too, a ship is named after a previous vessel. For example, there have been 9 different ships named Redoutable<\/em> and 6 named Jeanne d\u2019Arc<\/em> in the French Navy. This practice of repeating names is also common in the merchant marine, among trawlers, and so on. Anita <\/a>Conti<\/a> <\/a>was a pioneer of French oceanography, and as a result, there are ships named Anita Conti<\/em> in several ports across France, including Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But little by little, times have changed, and conventions have become more relaxed. And for merchant ships, they were always a bit less strict. So much so that today we come across vessels whose names are whimsical, or serve as a humorous nod as much as a reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And thus, there are boats named after other boats, but with much more creative freedom. For example, there\u2019s the Mayflower<\/em>, named after the ship that carried the pioneers of British colonization<\/a> to New England. Or the Titanic<\/em>, which needs no introduction. There\u2019s also the Pen Duick<\/em>, a 38-meter yacht named after Eric Tabarly\u2019s first boat<\/a>, designed by William Fife, and the Bounty<\/em>, named after the English ship on which that famous mutiny took place in 1789.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another category, it\u2019s culture (including pop culture) that really comes through. So we find the \u201cmotor-barge + barge\u201d pairing Hasta la vista \/ Baby<\/em>, a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger\u2019s line in Terminator 2<\/a><\/em>, or Bohemian \/ Rhapsody<\/em>, which takes its name from the Queen song<\/a>. In the \u201cmovies\u201d section, there\u2019s also the Bullitt<\/em>, named after the famous crime thriller<\/a> starring Steve McQueen, which even incorporates the film\u2019s font and graphic elements. Less pop-culture-oriented and somewhat surprising is the Delvaux<\/em>, named after the surrealist painter Paul Delvaux<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes it gets downright trivial, since the old slogan for Bohemian \/ Rhapsody<\/em> was Mac<\/em> \/ Ouille<\/em>. Which we will not try to translate into English.
It doesn\u2019t get much more vivid than that\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
